I want to show another version of transitioning from a color image to a sepia toned black & white print with an "Orton" type overlay (named for Michael Orton who developed the technique using camera movement and sandwiching slide film). This image was made in Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC which has been the home of many famous and infamous South Carolinians since 1849. The eight member crew of the Confederate submarine, the H.L. Hunley raised from Charleston Harbour in 2000, was buried here at Magnolia in 2004.

To the right, I have converted the above image to black & white with adjustments to the color channels, levels and curves in PhotoShop.
The next image has been cropped and a sepia tint over- lay has been applied. For those who may be interested
in the settings I used for the image, they are as follows:
Red=92%; Yellow=110%; Green=133%; Cyan=60%;
Blue=20%; Magenta=80%; Hue=37°; Saturation=25%.
And finally, I applied a modified Orton type finish which I believe gives the image a painterly look, as well as a somewhat more aged look. To learn more about the "Orton technique", click here and you will be taken to the first page of results on Google. I use a combination of several methods plus throw a few of my own in. Hey it's fun. The technique does not work well for every image, but if you record an action or two of different methods, then you can apply it quickly to a candidate to see how it works for that image.
Until next time, good shooting!
