I have lived in the Washington, DC metro area, in Virginia, for almost 38 years. Almost 28 years ago a huge five-piece public sculpture was installed in a park, Hains Point, not five miles from where I now live . The work of sculptor, J. Seward Johnson, the work is named "The Awakening" and in all those years we were practically neighbors, I had never visited. So when I recently became aware that the sculpture was being dug up on Wednesday, February 20 to be relocated to a commercial development in Maryland, I decided it was about time I paid a visit. On this past Sunday my partner and I made the short trip and I'm so glad we did.
As I said, I'm really glad I was able to see this popular attraction before it was moved. Now I wonder if I should act more like a tourist and less like a resident before some other treasure disappears from right under my nose.
I hope you enjoy the photos.

Amazing sculpture. I wish communities would commission more monumental works made to be touched and embraced.
I know what you mean about being a tourist instead of a resident. It is so easy to overlook great things right in front of you.

well...
it is funny
you do not need to be a tourist to appreciate things
that is a problem I have with world travelers
there are cathedrals/glorious churches/museums/zoos all here in dc
glad you saw it before it was moved
it was a cool little draw to bring people to a little place in the middle of no where
a place with some cool stuff circling around it
I will still go there
but it will never be the same
oh
I took a mess of photos
maybe too many
but there have been other things that have happened that I never took pictures of and then later regretted
all that stuff is on my blog
I hear there is a cool statue in memory of the Titanic in SW
I plan on checking that out
as it is another hidden gem
this city is filled with hidden gems
