The object was to use converging lines to lead the eye into an image. Although I had never visited the Wall before, I decided to check out the location. It was a perfect day to avoid crowds of tourists...wet, miserable and chilly. After looking at the possibilities, I set my camera on a tripod at the apex of the wall to capture the Washington Monument at the converging lines formed by the Wall and the sidewalk. Just as I was about to release the shutter, that lone visitor appeared from seemingly nowhere at the point of convergence. Sometimes I guess we just get lucky.

After I had captured the image and was preparing to leave, I turned to the left and there on Panel 1 of the Wall I saw the names of some of my aviation unit buddies from 1964-65, at eye level, right in front of me. The sight of those names brought on emotions that I had not expressed since the day they were killed in Vietnam. I have been back several times since then and am always overwhelmed by the tremendous loss those pieces of black granite represent.

Earlier this month another name was etched on the wall. The addition brings the number of names on the wall to 58,261.

Frank Z

Another of Mama Shan's Outstanding Photoshop Tutorials

Ramblings

In photography as art, what do we really mean by "original" anymore? It's pretty clear when you are talking about original or vintage prints made from the film negative of the masters of yesteryear. But does it even make a difference as to who makes the print or is it who made the image that is on the negative that results in an original photograph? I'm pretty sure there were prints made by master printers for photographers and not printed by the photographers themselves. Just as is the case of photogravures that were pulled by master artists, using original negatives, either with or without the photographer's guidance...such as this Jon Goodman gravure of Edward Steichen's "The Flatiron."

And then what about the future? There will come a time when there are no negatives in the process. Already has to some degree. Then what is the original...the raw file of 1s and 0s? Or the processed and converted file suitable for printing...or the first print made and signed by the photographer? Further, which file is the original...the one on your hard drive or the two or three exact duplicate backups of the file on removable media. I think a lot of my questions about this subject really started after seeing the Robert Frank exhibit at the National Gallery of Art recently. It was a great experience overall, but particularly to me, that we were able to see his marked up negatives as a first cut, then the printed contact sheets, then the 8x10s with his notes and crop lines pinned to a bulletin board and then finally those magnificent 83 prints that ended up in "The Americans." It dawned on me that future generations will not be able to experience being immersed in the step-by-step work of the photogs of today who will at some point become the masters of tomorrow.

What are your thoughts on the subject?

Frank

Mama Shan - Watermarked Client Proofing Disk

Photo of the Month for January

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5292798411177921970" style="FLOAT: right; The winter scene I chose for this month was in the backyard of my partner's family. I'm not really a "snow" person, being from the South, however I do love to watch while it's falling and before it is spoiled by human and animal traffic.

This was a particularly beautiful snowfall and I was the first one to step out with my camera. Our long-time friends and fellow Cereus enthusiasts, Ralph and Steve, gave us the heads up on the impending blooming of their Night Blooming Cereus.

The first photo shows the buds as they were beginning to open at 7:15 on the evening of August 20. At about 8:30, Ralph called to say that the blooming had started and that all six of the flowers were opening fast. I took the next photo of the almost fully opened blooms at about 9:40. The close-up shows the intricate details of the flower's throat.

Once again, the beauty of the flower and the perfume scent that it gives off is hard to describe. However, Ralph did a very good job of it on his blog. So I suggest you hop over there and take a look at his accounting of the evening (but come back of course).

you will know that one of my favorite subjects is the Southern Magnolia. I tend to concentrate my work on the flowers themselves, however, inspired by some of my favorite photo artists, I decided to try and create images from the beautiful shape and form of the leaves. As an example of images that have inspired me, see the work of Ruth Bernhard and Imogen Cunningham. The sepia toning of this leaf was inspired by Joyce Tenneson's Flower Portraits.

I welcome your comments.

Frank

Photoshop Mama's Colorization Concept

Posted below are three more of Mama Shan’s Photoshop tutorials. Abstract"

I'm of that generation where a boy's love of cars was at the center of his consciousness. We chopped them, blocked them, painted them with many coats of shiny lacquer and yes we raced them in the streets and cruised around the drive-in diners in them. Think "Happy Days." I think this affection doesn't go away as we get to be older boys. I still love big old classic cars. My first one was a 1949 Hudson. Originally green, I had it painted black, removed the hood ornament and leaded in the holes and then moved the antenna from the front to the rear fender. I installed 2" lowering blocks on the rear. This move was self defeating as the Hudson already had about the lowest silhouette of any car back then. After dragging the street a few times with the rear end, I had to remove the blocks.

I found the subject of my "Packard Abstract" at a July 4th antique car show several years ago. The original color was a beautiful cream. Here is an unprocessed photo of the original for comparison and an additional view.

Question and Answer on Technique

Occasionally I receive a question from a viewer on the process I use in my floral photography. I'm not really disciplined enough to use step-by-step techniques that are appropriate for each image. I guess it would be much easier and less time consuming if I did. But, my processes are much more experimental and I will work hours on one image until I like what I see. Here is a recent question and my answer:

Q: Frank, I very much enjoyed viewing your online photo gallery. Would you mind sharing how you photographed the southern magnolia and ten orchids? How did you create the black background, the lighting, and the appearance that the flowers were suspended in air? That is, how did you set up your studio?

Kindly,Cheryl

A: Cheryl,to answer your question about my "Suspended" flowers, I shoot about 95% of my flower shots outdoors in their natural environment, still attached to the mother plant. I don't have a studio but on the few occasions that I do bring any flowers inside, my technique as far as capture is very uncomplicated. I put a piece of black foam core or felt beneath the subject and either shoot from above or if the flowers are cut and in a vase, I shoot them against the black foam core or an off-white wall. I try always to use natural lighting but if I need flash I use a wireless control on my Nikon and two remote flashes, one on either side of the lens. Each light can be removed and placed away from the camera and each can be turned off or on and the output on each can be adjusted if shadowing is desired.

I use Photoshop CS3 as my digital darkroom as well as several graphic software plug-ins to achieve the results I'm looking for or sometimes discover accidently. I experiment a lot with different techniques but probably spend too much time in processing and fine tuning on the computer. However, IT was my professional background and I enjoy the fact that I can now control my output from original capture to final print.

I have several galleries on PBase.com one of which is devoted to providing examples of how I get from an original image to the final print. The floating magnolia is shown at the bottom of the web page and I invite you to take a look at that as well as the many other images that you will find there. The gallery is titled "Transitions" and can be found at:
http://www.pbase.com/fzipperer/transitions

Example:

1. The original image was a little blurry because I made it while standing in the last car of a fast moving southbound train on the way to my Dad's house in Charleston, SC. I guess that makes it a little unusual because I was observing where I had been and not where I was headed.

When a friend saw the image on my monitor, he said it looked like going to the "light at the end of the tunnel". Metaphorically however, I was not going from the dark to a brighter place but just the opposite. I was leaving the light and going to a darker place...placing my Dad into a nursing home from which he would never leave. But I didn't think about any of that, at least consciously, as I was bouncing and swaying down the tracks homebound. Almost 28 years ago a huge five-piece public sculpture was installed in a park, Hains Point, not five miles from where I now live . The work of sculptor, J. Seward Johnson, the work is named "The Awakening" and in all those years we were practically neighbors, I had never visited. So when I recently became aware that the sculpture was being dug up on Wednesday, February 20 to be relocated to a commercial development in Maryland, I decided it was about time I paid a visit. On this past Sunday my partner and I made the short trip and I'm so glad we did.

The sculpture is a bearded giant that appears to be emerging from the bowels of the earth. It is constructed of cast aluminum and at its highest point, a fully extended right arm, stands 17 feet tall. At its widest distance it is 70 feet across. Very impressive!! And very accessible as you can see from the children crawling into its mouth and up its emerged leg to slide down as though it were a sliding board.

As I said, I'm really glad I was able to see this popular attraction before it was moved. This month's image is one of my favorite subjects to shoot...the Southern Magnolia. I made this image in color then converted it to black & white and finally applied a sepia tinted finish. Then using the technique described in the August 1 entry "Another Transition", I applied the painterly effect to achieve the finished image.

Frank

Photo of the Month for October

This photo is a bit different from my usual style of printing floral images. Usually I use a black or very dark background so that the flower pops out to the viewer. But I was given 50 black calla lilies for my last birthday (which was a big one) and I really wanted a photograph that would show off the exotic looking bloom. Of course it's not really black, but so dark purple that it appears black. I decided to print in B&W against a high-key white background to emphasize the subject. I don't usually border my prints, but I used a very thin dark gray line to outline the image so that the print doesn't bleed into the mat.

Frank

Photo of the Month for September

The photo I have selected for this month is one of my favorites.

The image is a night blooming cereus titled "Queen of the Night."

The bloom has a lot of wonderful attributes, but the one I can't share with you in this image is the profoundly sweet perfume it gives off when it opens...almost pure vanilla. Sadly it only blooms at night and only lasts one night. Because of that, many people have not seen the bloom. I captured this image when friends called and said that it appeared the flower would open during the night. We had to wait awhile, but it did bloom and this is what it looked like.

I hope you enjoy the photo until you have the opportunity to actual be in the presence of the real thing.

The Next Internet Millionaire

By now, surely you have heard the buzz about Joel Comm's Internet reality show, "The Next Internet Millionaire".

People are giving rave reviews to this incredibly ambitious project due to its entertainment and educational value.

I'm pleased to tell you that episode 2 of this groundbreaking show is now online!
http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?af=630740

This episode features Internet marketing legend, Armand Morin, as he teaches the contestants the importance of branding. This was the first time I had visited this church on a trip back home last November. Behind it, in its very old cemetery, are buried my great-great grandparents on my mother's mother's side. I have just recently discovered their existence and my connection to them. My great-great-grandfather, who was at one time the church clerk, was excommunicated for trying to take liberties with some church sisters...but that's another story. He did at least make it to the burial ground.

Having visited and photographed cathedrals in both Europe and this country and being inspired by their grandeur and architectural design, I had an altogether different experience with this little wood frame church and its small but relatively soaring steeple and cross. The architecture so very simple and the building so stark white. It was the middle of the day with no clouds and the sun high in the sky and a little to my left.

Although, as I said before, I seldom compose in the viewfinder with a final image in mind, I saw the possibility of a graphic black & white with the clapboards just barely in shadow and the sky so purely blue pierced by the cross atop the steeple. My first inclination was to name the image "This Way to Heaven" but not being particularly religious I just named it "Wassamassaw Baptist Church."

Best regards,

Frank Z

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

My selection for August is one of a series of images that I have recently started work on with the subject title of "Hands". This image was made in Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC which has been the home of many famous and infamous South Carolinians since 1849. For those who may be interested
in the settings I used for the image, they are as follows:
Red=92%; Yellow=110%; Green=133%; Cyan=60%;
Blue=20%; Magenta=80%; Hue=37°; Saturation=25%.

And finally, I applied a modified Orton type finish which I believe gives the image a painterly look, as well as a somewhat more aged look. To learn more about the "Orton technique", click here and you will be taken to the first page of results on Google. I use a combination of several methods plus throw a few of my own in. Hey it's fun. The technique does not work well for every image, but if you record an action or two of different methods, then you can apply it quickly to a candidate to see how it works for that image.

Until next time, good shooting!

Frank

Transitions

Occasionally someone will ask me how I get to a final print from the original image capture. So I am going to post an example of my process. But first there are two items to consider: 1) I almost never have a final image in mind when I make the original photo. In other words, very seldom do I compose in the viewfinder. If I recognize that the subject has possibilities I take it as raw material, a starting point, which then leads to item number; 2) Almost all of my final prints are manipulated by me in varying degrees using "digital darkroom" tools, such as Photoshop.

I made the original image in this example because one of my favorite subjects is the Calla Lily. As you can see, the image, which was originally in color, has been shaded to illustrate where I decided to crop to use the very interesting center bunch of flowers.

(Click on an image to see large view)

The second image shows the cropping result as well as hatch

marks that I have added to show where I will eliminate the

remaining background.

In the third image, the background has been filled with black and the properties of the lilies have been adjusted using curves and levels to enhance the black, white and gray output and the brightness and contrast.

I could have stopped there (some may say I should have). However, I decided I wanted the finished image to have a painterly effect. So I applied a technique known as the "Orton Effect" named for the photographer who developed it originally using layers of 35mm slide film. The effect has now been adapted to digital photography using layers in software applications such as Photoshop, which I used here.

The next image layer is a duplicate of the last with Gaussian blur added and a simulated overexposure applied.

Once you are satisfied with the amount of blur, this layer is used to overlay image 3 and the amount of opacity is adjusted so that the sharp features of the underlying layer come through to the degree desired. I modified the technique in this case and put a copy of image 3 back on top to lessen the blurry effect.

After flattening all the layers this is the final image. The mat and frame and copyright symbol are added for presentation and would not appear on a final high resolution print.

If you are interested in seeing other examples of how I got to some of my images, take a look at my pBase Gallery "Transitions."

Please invite your friends to view my blog and my website.

Best regards,
Frank

Newsletter #7

Hello everyone...here is the much anticipated newsletter #7. The biggest news is that I have finally finished the redesign of my website which I mentioned I was working on in the last newsletter. I also am introducing a new blog in which I hope to keep you informed of various photography related items, including a Picture of the Month. I will use the blog to post the Newsletter. So take a look and please feel free to leave comments.

1. Updated: I have completely redesigned the way my online gallery looks. There is one gallery now subdivided into three albums. Since I am doing more in black and white and toned images, the new albums are grouped into those categories plus color. Each print in an album will be available in a limited edition of 50 numbered, signed and matted photo.
The software I use offers a lot of viewing options. If you have time, choose the slideshow. Each album has it's own different background music. Of course if you don't want to listen, you can turn off the audio. Please let me know what you think about the new gallery.
2. Continuing: I continue to offer website designing for clubs, groups, individuals and families as well as small businesses. Take a look at some of my original websites and samples of many more that are available at Frank Zipperer :: Web Designs. I would be happy to talk with you about your specific requirements.

Ten prints from my Limited Edition Series are available as custom note cards. The cards are printed with either a 4"x6" or 4"x4" image using archival pigmented inks on heavy white 5"x7" single fold card stock and I sign each card below the image. These cards are suitable for framing. The cards are shipped in a white presentation box with clear plastic cover. If you REALLY care enough, see my cards here. They are available as a mixed or matched set of ten.

3. Amazon.com affiliation: For those of you who like to shop or compare online, I want to remind you that I am an affiliate of Amazon. I have a new store on my website so that you can order any item that Amazon sells. As an affiliate, I do receive a small commission on all sales that are made through my website. So naturally I would appreciate your ordering through my Amazon Store. My store is set up primarily to display cameras and related photo equipment, but there is a search button on the front page that will take you to any of the thousands of items on the Amazon website. Click here to shop around.
If you would prefer to go directly to the Amazon home page, click here: Amazon.com Home Page

4. Links to other photography sites: I have continued to find other Nature and Fine Art photo sites and now have 300 together in an easy to use directory of Guest Photographers. Most of them have put reciprocal links on their sites back to mine. I visit each one of the sites that I list on my Guest Photographer pages to make sure they are quality sites and offer something unique to my visitors. Visit the online galleries of these outstanding photographers when you have some time to enjoy their work: http://www.fzippererphoto.com/links.html

Wishing all of you the very best,

Frank

Picture of the Month

Many of you know that my favorite photo subject in nature is flowers. If you didn't already know that, one visit to my online gallery would reveal it right away. I enjoy not only finding and capturing the floral subject, but I also spend many hours in my digital darkroom, manipulating and tweaking an image until I like it well enough to want to share it with an audience.

Each month I will feature one of my finished prints in this blog and also the home page of my website. This month's favorite is titled "Black Calla Lilies". I chose to execute this image in black & white to emphasize the already black look of these unusual Calla Lilies.

I hope you enjoy my Picture of the Month.

Frank

Welcome to my blog

Welcome.
